Large JSON file viewer

Open a big JSON file from your device and browse it as a tree, a table or formatted text. The file is read in your browser and never uploaded, and very large documents switch to a read-only mode that keeps scrolling fast.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose Open file (Ctrl+O, or ⌘O on a Mac), or drag the file onto the page.
  2. When the status bar reports the parse, browse the Tree, or switch to Table for an array of records.
  3. Press Ctrl+F (⌘F) to search, or type a path such as $.users[1] in the find bar to jump to a node.

Worked example

A small sample stands in for your file here. Open your own file to see its size, line count and node count in the status bar.

Input

{"users":[{"id":1,"name":"Ada","role":"admin"},{"id":2,"name":"Lin","role":"editor"}]}

Output

{
  "users": [
    {
      "id": 1,
      "name": "Ada",
      "role": "admin"
    },
    {
      "id": 2,
      "name": "Lin",
      "role": "editor"
    }
  ]
}

A measured example

We opened a 52.4 MB file (52,428,028 bytes) holding 51,501 records, each a small object with a 996-character string, in Chromium 154 on desktop Linux. Parsing took about 1.0 second, and the tree was ready about 1.9 seconds after the file was chosen. The document had 154,505 nodes.

That file is shallow and mostly text. Deeply nested data, many small numbers, an older laptop or a phone can take longer, so treat these numbers as one reference point rather than a guarantee.

Options and edge cases

  • Files up to 300 MB are accepted. That is a safety limit rather than a promise: what opens comfortably depends on the device memory and the shape of the data.
  • Above 2,000,000 characters or 30,000 lines the input becomes read-only so the views stay fast. Edit anyway turns editing back on.
  • Parsing runs on the main thread, so the page pauses while a very large file is read.
  • Documents over 2,500,000 characters are not saved for your next visit; open the file again instead.
  • Only the rows on screen are drawn in the editor, tree, table and text views, so scrolling stays smooth once the file is open.

Private by default

Your document stays in this browser. Tool Kumar parses, converts and creates downloads on your device, with no account or upload step.

How do I open a large JSON file on Windows?
